Refugee Week 2023

Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Founded in 1998 and held every year around World Refugee Day on the 20 June, Refugee Week is a growing global movement. The 2023 theme for Refugee Week and World Refugee Week is ‘Compassion’.

To mark Refugee Week 2023, King's College London will be hosting a range of events to highlight and celebrate the many ways that the King's community responds to the global issue of forced displacement and work to create opportunities for forcefully displaced people. Activities at King’s will include a day of workshops for students and staff, performances, exhibitions, and events involving leading academics, people with lived experience and charities that support refugees and forced migrants.

King's Sanctuary Programme

The King’s Sanctuary Programme was formed in 2015 in response to the global issue of forced displacement. Over the past 8 years, King’s has harnessed its expertise in education and remote learning, world-class research and existing partnerships to initiate and lead on projects that create positive opportunities for forcibly displaced people. King’s also aims to enhance understanding of forced displacement among our students, staff and alumni and to develop opportunities for them to make a positive contribution through engagement activities, training and volunteering opportunities.

Never at Sea

Never at Sea is a creative intervention at the St Mary le Strand Church which explores the intersection between forced migration and climate change. Over six days, against the backdrop of a film, sound and sculptural installation, McMillan and her co-collaborators will present a series of talks, symposia and performances.

The project explores the role of creativity in creating a safe space for empathy, imagination, interdisciplinary conversations and collaborations around often divisive issues. The project has been developed in collaboration with the Refugee Council, King's Sanctuary Programme and King's Culture, King's College London.
