All welcome!

The music department is delighted to welcome Professor Cat Hope, Professor of Composition at Monash University and Visiting Professor in the Department of Culture, Media, and Creative Industries here at King's, who will talk about her recent opera, Speechless.

Speechless is a 70-minute opera for 4 soloists, community choir and bass orchestra. It is a wordless, animated notation opera intended as a personal response to the 2014 Human Rights Commission report ‘The Forgotten Children: National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention’.

The opera, directed by the composer, was co-commissioned and premiered at the Perth Festival in 2019 over 6 sold out nights to critical acclaim, was awarded an AMC APRA AMCOS Art Music Award in 2020 for Best New Work (Dramatic), and a nomination in the Helpmann Awards for music direction.

Produced by Tura New Music with support from the Australia Council for the Arts and the WA Department of Cultural Industries.

Read more about Speechless here.

Online participation via Teams is open to King's members and affiliates. Please be in touch with Gavin Williams (gavin.williams@kcl.ac.uk) for the Teams link or with any other queries.
