Supporting and Developing Pre-service Teachers - A CITED event

In England, the impact of the Schools White Paper The Importance of Teaching (DfE, 2010) was significant, particularly on the university sector, heralding renewed pressure towards entirely school-led and school-based pre-service teacher training. So, almost a decade later, where are we now with pre-service teacher education in England?

This seminar will some way in answering this question through reports on two doctoral research studies that have explored aspects of the current state of pre-service training courses in England. 

Sarah Steadman (King’s College London) will report on her ESRC-funded research into pre-service teachers’ learning and development across three different routes into teaching (university-led, School Centred Initial Teacher Training, and an alternative provider). 

Rachel Roberts (University of Reading) will present her study that explores the role of school-based mentors in providing support and training in the work-place, extending current understandings of the role of mentoring in beginning teacher development.

The seminar will be chaired by Professor Christine Harrison, Associate Director (London).
