Talks
Rethinking assistive devices for mobility and independence
🔹Professor Matthew Maddocks, Professor of Health Services Research & Rehabilitation, King’s College London
Our first presentation, 'Assistive devices to support indoor and outdoor mobility for people living with advanced illness', will examine how mobility aids can enhance daily life, independence and wellbeing for people with serious illness.
Falls, poor mobility and limited uptake of assistive devices can reduce independence among people with advanced illness. Our first presentation will focus on the 'Assistive devices to support indoor and outdoor mobility for people living with advanced illness' project, which examines how mobility aids can enhance daily life, independence and wellbeing for people with serious illness.
Matthew is an academic physiotherapist and Professor of Health Services Research and Rehabilitation. He has held several National Institute for Health and Care Research roles and is co-lead for the Palliative & End of Life Care research theme of the NIHR Applied Research Collaborative for South London.
He leads a team undertaking applied clinical and health services research that advances rehabilitation and palliative care for people with serious illness, through better management of complex symptoms and syndromes.
Making sense of dying with dementia: finding meaning when living with dementia as a life-limiting illness
🔹Dr Liam Gabb, Registrar in Palliative Medicine and NIHR Doctoral Fellow, King’s College London
Our second presentation, ‘Making sense of dying with dementia: finding meaning when living with dementia as a life-limiting illness’, explores how people with dementia can find meaning and dignity throughout life and towards the end of their journey.
Dementia poses a unique challenge to traditional models of caring for people with terminal illness. The ‘Meaningful Dying in Dementia’ project seeks to improve quality of life and enhance dignity for people with dementia by understanding what truly matters to them at the end of life.
Liam is a NIHR Doctoral Fellow and Registrar in Palliative Medicine. His clinical background has driven an interest in end-of-life care for those at the intersection of physical and mental ill-health.
He began his PhD at the Cicely Saunders Institute in 2023, developing a theory of ‘meaningful dying’ for people with dementia to deepen understanding of how to support them when facing the end of their lives.
Session chair
🔹Professor Glenn Robert, Vice Dean (Research & Impact), Faculty of Nursing Midwifery and Palliative Care, King’s College London
