In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the face of education as schools and universities were forced to close. Established systems and practices of preparing new teachers for schools closed down too and leaders of initial teacher education programmes responded by inventing new arrangements utilising video-conferencing packages and email. Nearly a year later, the impact of the ongoing pandemic on teacher education is still acutely felt.

This Centre for Innovation in Teacher Education and Development (CITED) seminar explores the impact of the pandemic on initial teacher education in England and beyond. Warren Kidd and Jean Murray’s study addresses how pedagogies adapted as the removal of the practicum relocated learning communities to new online spaces. Linda la Velle and Stephen Newman consider both the challenges that the pandemic poses for initial teacher education and the opportunities afforded by a new digital pedagogy for ITE.
