How easy is it to forge a career in academia when you are from a working class or disadvantaged background?

This event brings together leading writers, journalists and academics to discuss the thorny topic of class in scholarship. We will examine barriers to entry into academia for working class academics and explore how academic notions of intelligence serve (or don’t) those who define themselves as working class.

There will be an opportunity for networking over refreshments after the panel discussion and Q&A.

The panel will consist of:

  • Chair: Dr Sally Marlow, radio broadcaster and Public Engagement Fellow at King’s College London.
  • Dr Sam Friedman, Associate Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics, and Commissioner at the Social Mobility Commission.  Author of The Class Ceiling:  Why it Pays to be Privileged.
  • Dr Cerisse Gunasinghe, postdoctoral researcher and Counselling Psychologist in the department of Psychological Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London.
  • Dr Paul Craddock, cultural historian and author.
