Hongbo Shan, deputy director of strategic planning at Donghua University in Shanghai, will join us to discuss a new higher education strategy for China

About the seminar

In 2017, there were 37.7 million students in 2,731 higher education institutes in China. China therefore has an internationally significant higher education system. However, it has very few universities in the global ‘top 100’ rankings (e.g. THE, QS, US News, etc.).

The Double First-Class University Plan, first developed by the Chinese government in 2015 and implemented from 2017, is intended to strengthen the Chinese university system, to shape both a group of elite Chinese universities and a group of subject disciplines with global reach and impact. The aim is to insert these universities into the lists of world-class universities and world-class subjects by 2050.

In this presentation, the strategy will be introduced and discussed, along with implications both for China and the rest of the world.

Hongbo Shan, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Donghua University, Shanghai, China
