The Paradox of Russia's Nationalist Project: The Development of Social Consciousness from Below
with
Karine Clément École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris)
Attempts to trace “nationalism from below” or “ordinary nationalism” in Russia have yielded surprising results: respondents display not only different types of nationalism, but also social criticism. Many ordinary Russians, especially working class people and retirees, particularly from the regions, express a strong sense of social criticism, targeted at social inequalities and unfair distribution. And this social criticism appears to be linked with nationalism, or, in other words, with the development of the national imagination and the conceptualization of society.
