Dr Foteini Dimirouli (Keble, Oxford) presents: The voice explaining at once formally and intimately: James Merrill’s translations of C.P. Cavafy
James Merrill’s turn to formal elements in Cavafy’s poems, especially those Cavafy identified as ‘erotic’ or ‘sensual’, adhered to his own quest for a poetic code that would register shunned experience and marginal identities, thus paving the way for Cavafy’s appreciation as a gay poet.
