Nandini Das is Professor of English Literature at the University of Liverpool. She works on Renaissance literature and cultural history, with special emphasis on travel and cross-cultural encounters between Europe and Asia. She is volume editor of Elizabethan Levant Trade and South Asia in the forthcoming Oxford University Press edition of Richard Hakluyt’s The Principal Navigations, co-editor (with Tim Youngs) of the Cambridge History of Travel Writing, and Principal Investigator of the ‘Travailer’, ‘Envisioning the Indian City’, and ERC-funded Travel, Transculturality, and Identity in England, c. 1550-1700 (TIDE) projects.

Eva Johanna Holmberg is an Academy Research Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies, University of Helsinki, and a Visiting Fellow at the School of History, QMUL. She is the author of Jews in the Early Modern English Imagination (Ashgate, 2012, now Routledge), and has just completed her second book, tentatively titled Slaves of the Ottoman Sultan: British Encounters with the Peoples of the Book in the Early Seventeenth Century (under review). Her current research project, ‘Travel and Self-Description in seventeenth-century England’, is funded by the Academy of Finland in 2016-2021. It explores the multiple ways in which travel accounts carry traces of the aims and emotions of their authors and of their efforts at self-description and life accounting. She co-convenes the long-standing IHR seminar, Society, Culture and Belief, 1500-1800.
