Using big data to understand (and address) social inequality in palliative and end-of-life care

Big data has become a powerful resource for research on social inequality in palliative and end of life care. But can we go beyond observing the problem of inequality, towards understanding its causes and taking action to reduce inequalities?

Joanna will present evidence from her recently completed PhD thesis that uses big data to investigate the causes of inequality in palliative and end of life care. She will also consider future priorities for big data research in the context of a growing focus on the need to address inequity in palliative and end of life care.

About the speaker

Joanna has recently completed her PhD on socioeconomic inequality in palliative and end-of-life care at the Cicely Saunders Institute. She has a background in sociology, social policy and epidemiology and her research focuses on the use of big data to investigate the social determinants of the care people receive towards the end of life.
