Dante's Commedia famously presents itself as a detailed, vivid and highly structured account of the afterlife. But how exactly does it wish to invite its readers to think about salvation? In addressing this question, this paper will explore dimensions of Dante's poem often not taken into account. In particular, it will focus on aspects of the Commedia that suggest Dante's idea of salvation might have been more open-ended and self-critical than usually recognized.
