Voces y Trayectorias is an online series of public conversations with people who have played a meaningful role in shaping, implementing, or reflecting on processes of psychiatric deinstitutionalisation (DI) in different parts of the world, with an emphasis on Brazil, Chile and the rest of South America.

About the speaker

Dr Benedetto Saraceno is an Italian psychiatrist internationally recognized for his leadership in mental health reform.

A former Director of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization, he was closely involved in advancing community-based care worldwide, from his early work with Franco Basaglia’s team in Trieste to his pivotal role in the 1990 Caracas Declaration on psychiatric reform in Latin America.

His career combines intellectual authority, policy leadership, and activist engagement, making him an essential voice for discussions on deinstitutionalisation.
