This interactive workshop will look at Vulgar (Spoken) Latin and how it developed into the 5 major Romance Languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian. We will look at sources (graffiti, informal literature and ancient grammar texts) of Vulgar Latin and what they tell us about the real spoken language of the ancient Romans. Finally, using the comparative method we will reconstruct some Latin terms by tracing back their results in the modern Romance languages.
Suitable for: Latin Short Courses, Latin PG beginners or anyone interested in Latin or in classics
