We’re delighted to invite you to a special concert for the premiere of a new piece for orchestra and choir commissioned in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Department of War Studies.

Composed by Catarina Domenici, this uniquely special occasion will see an orchestra and choir including King’s staff and students performing with libretto by Dr Vinicius Mariano de Carvalho, Department of War Studies, and English translation by Professor David Treece, Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. It will be performed by King’s Brazil Ensemble, guest musicians from the Alvorada Choro ensemble, soloists and a choir composed of students and staff from War Studies directed by Dr de Carvalho.

The cantata is divided in two parts, each made up of 15 sections. The first part is composed of a series of figurative and reflexive poems about 15 days preceding the end of the world. The second part is about the recreation of the world, described in a very unusual and humoristic way.

The idea is to encourage audiences to reflect on what War Studies means, that whilst it encapsulates the in-depth understanding of how destruction and death comes about, it also deals with the other side of the coin, the idea of peace, reconstruction, recreation, and this is also a vitally important part of the scholarship and teaching of the Department. This cantata expresses this complexity in an original and artistic way.

There will be a drinks reception after in the Terrace Cafe.

Book your place here.
