Women in War and International Politics (WIWIP) is holding a film screening of Under the Wire, a documentary following the late war reporter Marie Colvin after her arrival in Syria in 2012.

About the documentary

In February 2012, Sunday Times foreign affairs correspondent Marie Colvin and her photographer Paul Conroy traveled to Syria to report on the plight of civilians in Homs, a city under relentless siege. Colvin was determined to show the realities of life for individuals caught up in this military confrontation between the Syrian military and the Syrian opposition, a part of the wider Syrian Civil War.

This was the final assignment on which Colvin and Conroy would work together, as only one of them made it home. Colvin was killed by an improvised explosive device whilst carrying out the frontline coverage she so strongly believed in. Paul Conroy was injured in the attack but survived it, escaping to tell the story.

Using Conroy’s book, along with on-the-ground footage and interviews with colleagues, Under the Wire tells the story of Marie Colvin’s tragic final assignment, highlighting her courage in the face of brutal war and her determination to reveal the true human cost of conflict – a story she paid to tell with her life.
