Are you 16-21 and not at university? Do you want to make a difference? Are you interested in working with other young people to shape the direction of new research?

We’re looking for young people aged 16–21 who would be interested in joining in discussions about and offering advice to our project, Young Lives, Young Futures. The event will take place in London.

The project is about the experiences of the 50% of young people who don’t go to university as they move between school, further education, employment and/or unemployment.

We are a group of researchers based in a university and a charity and we believe we need help from younger people who have more immediate experience of, and better insights into, what the lives of the people we are looking at are actually like.

What would it involve?

Attending a meeting in London on Tuesday 17 December, 09.30–14.30, where you would be working in groups to learn more about the project and share experiences and insights and formulate advice for the project team. You would then summarise your conclusions and advice, and present them to an advisory panel made up of other partners who are supporting the project.

Refreshments, including breakfast and lunch, will be provided. We will cover your travel expenses and missed earnings, and overnight accommodation and food costs if you are coming from outside London. Everyone will also get a £10 e-voucher as a ‘thank you’ for their participation.

Why take part?

We believe that this research has the potential to improve the experiences of and opportunities available to young people in the future and we are working with a range of relevant agencies to try and make a difference. Your help would be an important part of that process. We will also aim to make the day interesting, relaxed and enjoyable in itself.

As well as working with other young advisors and the research team, there will be an opportunity to meet and work with policymakers and practitioners from a number of organisations, to influence and learn something from them and to gain experience in communicating with new audiences. It will also be an opportunity to find out about what is involved in doing research.

If you are interested in joining the group or would like any further information, please email Sharon Gewirtz. The event will take place in London and the address and a registration pack will be given out beforehand.
