An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced Internal Communications manager to join the Communications & External Affairs team and report into the Senior Communications Manager (Internal Communications).

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and creative Internal Communications Manager who will manage and support a wide range of internal communications within the HR/Organisational Development (OD)/Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Directorate which supports King’s strategic ambition to build a thriving staff community and to raise awareness of the staff experience for current and prospective employees. The role will include developing and implementing a communications channel and content strategy to support communications within the directorate and with key audiences and stakeholders across the University.

The successful candidate will take a proactive and collaborative approach to delivering communications and have a thorough working knowledge and experience of a broad range of communications planning and activities, with a particular focus on generating content for internal audiences.

Using their excellent writing and storytelling skills, problem solving and hands on experience, they will create innovative content, using a variety of formats to amplify the voices of King’s staff community and bring King’s Strategy 2026 priority of a Thriving Staff Community to life.

This is a hybrid role, the post holder will spend part of their working week on campus and part of the week working remotely. 

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage internal communications and engagement for the HR/Organisational Development (OD)/Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Directorate using a range of channels (email, intranet, Sharepoint, Microsoft Teams, Viva Engage) to ensure timely, consistent and effective communications. 
  • Working closely with the Senior Communications Manager, analyse internal communications challenges for staff in the Directorate and the wider University to develop a refreshed communications and engagement strategy and approach. 
  • Develop, manage and deliver a communications plan to elevate, communicate, engage and embed a Thriving Staff Community across King’s. 
  • Seek out and write compelling stories which align to and showcase a Thriving Staff Community using multiple formats including written content, videos and podcasts. 
  • Plan, manage and deliver effective communications which supports the staff survey cycle. 
  • Provide advice and best practice guidance on communications and channels for the promotion of the HR Directorate’s activities to key internal audiences. 
  • Manage continual evaluation and review of the effectiveness of the communications and engagement activity, including gathering, interpreting, and presenting data; identifying areas for improvement; and gathering feedback. 
  • Develop effective relationships with internal colleagues, senior stakeholders and key partners. 
  • Act as a brand guardian ensuring adherence to King’s house style, language and tone. 
  • Identify reputational issues, escalating where necessary and advising on solutions, working closely with the University’s Communications & External Affairs team. 
  • Undertake other activities, as directed by the Vice President (People & Talent), Communications & External Affairs Executive Director and Deputy Directors or colleagues as appropriate. 
  • Act as a guardian and role model for Our Principles in Action.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  1. Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience. 
  2. Experience of planning and implementing communication strategies and plans working with a wide range of stakeholders 
  3. Excellent verbal and writing skills including editing and proof reading to a high level. 
  4. Ability to produce effective content for a diverse audience, across multiple channels in a timely fashion and evaluating their success.  
  5. Experience of absorbing and evaluating complex information from various sources to create clear and engaging content. 
  6. Experience of influencing and negotiating with stakeholders, often beyond your immediate team, applying judgement and identifying solutions. 
  7. Experience of adjusting messaging, tones and styles for different internal and external audiences. 
  8. Ability to relate easily to a wide range of people and different communication styles in a large and complex organisation. 
  9. Self-motivated, results oriented and with a ‘can do’ attitude. 
  10. Willingness and ability to adapt quickly and responsively to changing priorities and developing areas of work as required.  
  11. Experience and skill in creating and managing web content within a content management system and/or use of HTML. 

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of working in the Higher Education Sector or a large matrix organization. 
  2. Demonstrable training in communications.
