King’s History department is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. We particularly value conversation between scholars of different periods and places, with different approaches. We also value our connections beyond the world of scholarship, with strong relationships to our local communities, and to cultural and policy institutions on a national and global scale; impact is central to much of what we do.

About the role

King’s College London History Department is seeking to appoint an Early Career Development Fellow in the Modern History of Britain and the World, for a three-year period.

The Fellow will conduct research, produce research publications, deliver teaching, and provide administrative and pastoral support for the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at King's. They will teach and contribute to teaching across a range of modules in the history of Britain, the British empire and Britain’s global connections, from 1750 onwards; they will also teach elements of King’s History’s core curriculum.

Fellows will be appointed on an Education & Research contract ('E&R') and will receive career development opportunities to increase their knowledge of the research funding landscape across Arts and Humanities. Advertised to in part to provide teaching cover for colleagues coordinating history at King’s Research Effectiveness Framework submission, funding for the posts is short-term and non-renewable; they do not fulfil a long-term need in the faculty.

The fellowship is intended to help the development of an early career scholar. It cannot be renewed at the conclusion of the period of the appointment. The fellow will not be eligible for internally funded research leave during their fellowship. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities has a particular interest in engaged research, and provides opportunities for scholars to develop the potential of their research across multiple fields and audiences.

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 31 August 2028.

About you

Please note that these are development positions and so have been limited to those within seven years of the award of their doctorate.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. PhD qualified in relevant subject area within the last seven years at point of application
2. Expertise in teaching and researching in the Modern History of Britain and the World
3. Clearly defined research interests related to the Modern History of Britain and the World compatible with the research, impact and engagement strategies of the department, faculty and college, including the potential for publications and impact projects of the highest quality
4. Experience of teaching relevant to the areas specified by the department, with clear evidence of potential to deliver innovative, effective and enjoyable teaching.
5. Ability to design the basics of a future externally funded research project
6. Some experience of effective and diligent academic administration and academic and/or external networking

Desirable criteria

1.      Teaching in Higher Education qualification (such as fellowship or associate fellowship of the Higher Education Academy)

2.      Knowledge and/or experience of designing and delivering online teaching

Appointment will be made following an interview and presentation by the candidate on the topic of: ‘Outline a five year programme of research, to be pursued for the duration of the fellowship and a subsequent research grant, in the field of Modern British and World History’
