About Us
The Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology is based within the School of Life Course and Population Sciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. The department has a long history of high academic esteem and has contributed on an international level in ageing science. The fellow will work within the core group of the Centre for Ageing Resilience in a Changing Environment alongside academic Consultant Geriatricians, data scientists, and allied health professionals working in ageing research.
About the role
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Clinical Research Fellow working within the Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology based at St Thomas’ Campus. This fellowship will offer the opportunity for a physician or resident doctor working within geriatric medicine or allied specialties to develop their own research ideas and lead on the successful completion of projects supervised by academic geriatricians and data scientists within the department. The department has significant broad expertise including clinical trials and clinical research, longitudinal studies, biomedical/ experimental medicine, and the use of electronic healthcare data for secondary research purposes. This fellowship is expected to offer the opportunity for the physician to apply for nationally competitive funding and/or undertake a higher degree (e.g., through successful application to a doctoral research training scheme). The precise project will depend on the interests of the fellow, but potential projects include the following:
- Development and implementation of novel Advance Care Planning using models generated from electronic healthcare data
- The use of pharmacogenomics in novel populations towards personalised medicine approaches (e.g., use of clopidogrel in stroke medicine)
- Development of a novel risk scoring tool to target treatment for sarcopenia based on longitudinal trajectories
The fellow will also work on a study using deep learning/ Artificial Intelligence models to characterise whole system changes on MRI scans in twin pairs. They will be expected to contact participants to notify them of incidental findings when notified to them by reporting radiologists, providing clear summary reports to the participants and their General Practitioners. This important role will involve close liaison between the research team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and the Department of Twin Research at King’s College London. The fellow will be supervised by Consultant Geriatricians/Physicians throughout this process.
This is a part time post (16 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 12 months.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with valid license to practice
- Completion of UK foundation programme or demonstration of equivalencies
- Strong attention to detail and meticulous organisation
- Able to work effectively within a multiprofessional team
- Previous experience managing data as part of audit, service evaluation, or research
- Able to think innovatively to develop new ideas and provide solutions to problems
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and overcome obstacles
Desirable criteria
- MRCP(UK) qualification or equivalent
- Previous conference abstracts or presentations
- Previous publications in peer reviewed journals
- Previous competitive award or grant funding
