About the role:
The Strategic Project Manager is key in leading successful project delivery to meet the strategic aims, ambitions, and objectives of the faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences (NMES).
This role sits with the faculty’s Business Operations function which provides strategic project support to the faculty’s leadership and reports to the Head of Business Operations who will direct the work programme. The role holder will work closely with the academic leadership, Director or Operations and Professional Services functional leads; the focus of which will change depending on the project.
The Strategic Project Manager will be expected to lead on relatively complex projects and must be comfortable representing the faculty with a range of stakeholders, as well as being able to write and present findings and make recommendations in a clear and concise manner. The post holder will work with colleagues to draw expertise and skills from others as required to ensure the success of projects.
The post holder will be responsible for managing a number of large and complex projects within the portfolio to support the needs of NMES within set budgets, timescales, and quality. The post holder will be required to deliver across all stages of the project lifecycle, as well as supporting broader strategic developments, benefits realisation and change management approaches. The team also contributes to developing best practice and common standards and encouraging use of by others in the faculty who are managing the delivery of projects.
This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you:
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
2. Demonstrable experience of managing strategic projects including scoping projects, planning, reporting, risk management and benefit management.
3. Strong strategic understanding and outstanding analysis skills, including structured problem solving, breaking down issues and communicating outcomes clearly
4. Ability to work relatively independently and to be confident working as part of a cross-functional team and building strong working relationships to drive effective outcomes
5. Highly numerate and analytical, can develop actionable insight from multiple and sometimes complex data sources
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
7. Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and negotiate as appropriate and build trust with senior colleagues
8. Flexible approach to work with high levels of emotional intelligence, comfortable working in an environment where there can be ambiguity and where priorities may change.
Desirable criteria
1. Experience of managing strategic projects within Higher Education.
2. A recognised project management qualification.
3. Experience of process review and improvement methods.
4. Experience of running process review workshops and project engagement sessions with stakeholders.
