The Faculty of Arts & Humanities at King’s is distinctive in representing exceptional strength in both the longer established disciplines (such as Philosophy, Classics, English, History, Languages, Music Philosophy and Theology) and world-leading quality in more recently established fields (such as Digital Humanities, Film, Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts, and Culture, Media and Creative Industries).

About the role

The English Department would like to appoint a 0.5 FTE Lecturer in Innovative Assessment Practices. The post will be on the Academic Education Pathway.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out educational scholarship focused on innovative assessment practices, and will work to support us in implementing TASK (Transforming Assessment for Students at King’s) reforms, which are currently ongoing across the College. They will also be responsible for researching best practice in programmatic assessment (uncoupling assessment from individual modules), seeking out models of where this has been adopted in English Departments around the UK, and putting together some proposals for what it might look like for us. With their expertise in assessment methods they will deliver lectures as part of our Skills and Support for your English Degree programme (including those embedded within our first-year curriculum), and to our MA students as part of the newly compulsory lecture series, Research Methods & Practice. They will thus directly support our students in understanding how to get the most out of their experiences of assessment and feedback in the Department. Finally, they will also deliver educational outcomes by carrying out and administering marking and related workloads.

The postholder will contribute, as personal tutor, to the pastoral care of students. They will be expected to undertake departmental administration as required. They will be responsible to the Head of Department.

This is a part-time post (0.5), offered on a fixed-term non-renewable twelve-month contract from 15th February 2026-15th February 2027.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. PhD qualified (PhD must have been awarded) in English Literature or related field
2. Experience of inclusive teaching and innovation in assessment
3. Ability to carry out educational scholarship and disseminate findings clearly
4. Collegiate, proven ability to work with others and to support them where necessary
5. Experience of contributing to the pastoral care of students
6. Excellent administrative skills; ability to support the organisational aspects of teaching and learning

Desirable:

1. Experience or knowledge of programmatic assessment or other assessment practices (including full/closed moderation)
2. Creative approach to administrative complexities and change
3. Additional pedagogical qualifications or experience, especially in assessment practice
