We are looking for an exceptional Associate Director of Philanthropy to lead the newly established King’s Maudsley Partnership (KMP) fundraising team and secure significant long-term philanthropic investment for children and adolescent mental health research and treatment. The King’s Maudsley Partnership will have its home at the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People in south London, opening in early 2025. The partnership brings together clinical and academic excellence in a unique collaboration between the UK’s largest NHS provider of specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (the Trust), and King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), the leading child and adolescent mental health research team in Europe – with Maudsley Charity as its charity partner alongside other leading philanthropists. The Centre has been partly funded by philanthropy (a very successful capital campaign secured in excess of £30m) and this role will work with the new Director of King's Maudsley Partnership, Professor Philip Shaw, and colleagues across the Trust, IoPPN, Maudsley Charity and KCL fundraising department to ensure philanthropic income continues to be a significant driver of change. The partnership is local, national and international in scale and ambition. Serving a local population which is among the most ethnically, socially and economically diverse in the world, our mission is to find new ways to predict, prevent and treat mental health disorders for Children and Young People (CYP) and then maximise translation of research and evidence into improved services locally, nationally, and globally. The ambition of the partnership and quality of partners attracts leading clinicians, scientists, allied professionals and students from all over the world. The Associate Director role therefore manages a large and complex network of stakeholders and must be comfortable in managing ambiguity, as well as prominent and conflicting priorities. The fundraising for KMP is a partnership between Maudsley Charity and King’s College London. The role is employed by King’s College London and reports to the Director of Development but will work as part of wider teams within the Charity, the university and the Trust. We operate a unique and powerful model, which brings together fundraising for our partnership across major and principal gifts, and trusts & foundations, with a developing portfolio of mid-level and corporate supporters.
The postholder will work across the partners, as well as with academics and clinical leaders, to develop specific asks for developed and agreed fundraising priorities, as we enter this new phase of fundraising for the King’s Maudsley Partnership. They will play a crucial role in ensuring that there is an agreed, realistic project strategy and plan, with clarity on roles, responsibilities and deliverables. The postholder will lead the team and represent fundraising at the highest levels including reporting at various boards and committees. The KMP fundraising programme formally reports into the KMP Strategic Board, and the Associate Director will be responsible for ensuring this group receives regular and timely updates. On a practical level, the Associate Director will be accountable to both Fundraising and Supporter Development (F&SD) at King’s and the Maudsley Charity. They will have a formal line report to the Director of Development at King’s. This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract. F&SD has a hybrid working approach, with a minimum of 40% of time in the office (typically equating to at least two days per week onsite at King’s or Maudsley Campus/Pears Maudsley Centre when the Centre opens in early 2025).

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria • A sustained track record of securing six figure gifts and achieving financial targets as a major gifts fundraiser. This includes a demonstrable ability to recognise and progress funding opportunities. • Experience of managing a high-performing major gifts team and an understanding of how to motivate, inspire, and empower fundraisers in a constructive and collaborative way to achieve stretching targets. • Experience of developing and implementing fundraising strategic plans to deliver philanthropic income for agreed priorities, and experience of proposal writing and case for support development. • Experience of working with senior academics and/or clinicians (or equivalent) and managing effective relationships. Diplomatic, persuasive, and credible at a senior level, possessing the professional gravitas that will engender the respect of key stakeholders including the academic community and potential donors. • Sound grasp of charity law, fundraising techniques, and donor recognition and stewardship programmes. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well good analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to work with a range of numerical and other data. • Ability to handle multiple deadlines, shifting priorities and rapid change with ease, while maintaining focus on the most important priorities for achieving success. • Experience of using a complex donor/client relationship database, e.g. MS Dynamics, Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce. Desirable criteria • Experience in a comprehensive philanthropy campaign • Experience of identifying and developing fundraising priorities and propositions. • An understanding of universities and/or charities as complex public sector organisations is desirable, as is an interest in and knowledge of factors affecting health and clinical research and university funding sources.
