Role purpose

The Professor(s) will provide academic leadership within the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery, and Palliative Care (NMPC), a world-leading centre for education, training and research. We are one of nine Faculties in King’s, benefiting from collaborations and partnership activities with other faculties. Our vision is to lead in transforming health and social care, policy & practice through integrating our cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, evidence-based education and engagement relevant to our fields. The appointed Professor(s) will contribute to the development of their academic field and the Faculty’s and King’s forward strategies. They will be ambitious in capturing external peer review grant income, deliver world leading publications and significant and wide-reaching impact from their research. They will contribute to building capacity and delivering our education programmes, collaborating with others across the faculty and beyond, and contributing to the management and academic leadership of either their Division or the Cicely Saunders Institute.

The successful candidate will have strong leadership, interpersonal and education skills and will champion an inclusive working environment. The post holder will have a track record of world-leading research in a field relevant to the discipline mix within the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery, and Palliative Care. The post holder will have a proven academic track record in achieving noteworthy publications in top journals and will bring expertise in securing grant income. In addition, they will demonstrate the ability to collaborate with others, and an appreciation for the broader academic offerings within King’s College London. The post holder will also be a supervisor to MSc and PhD students and have post- or undergraduate teaching experience within their field. There is great potential for formal collaborations or links with other Faculties or Schools within King’s College London where this would benefit role delivery.

Main purpose of the role

To conduct independent research and act as chief investigator and project leader, and in so doing: • Attract significant overhead and QR bearing grant research income and/or industrial research income. • Generate world class research publications and impact • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at King’s in appropriate areas of expertise, including leading relevant programmes or initiatives and supervising PhD students • Solve tomorrow’s problems through ground-breaking research, impact, education and collaboration • Build capacity by fostering the development of themselves, their teams and others, including of PhD students, and research and academic staff and actively participating and leading seminars, workshops etc.

The Faculty led winning a new NIHR Policy Research Unit for palliative and end of life care, as well as being leading contributors or co-leads for renew of two existing NIHR Public Research Units, on Mental Health and Health and Social Care Workforce as part of support from NIHR of £25m funding to tackle health and social care issues. The Faculty was a leading partner in the new UKRI supported King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub. The Faculty holds multiple awards, project grants and training awards from UKRI, NIHR, EC and many relevant charities.

Our schools of education deliver a comprehensive education and training portfolio, including undergraduate health and a suite of related BSc programmes in Biomedical Sciences. Within our Faculty of Natural, Mathematics & Engineering Sciences is King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence bringing together the diverse and growing community in artificial intelligence (AI) at the university, whilst the London Medical Imaging and AI Centre for Value-Based Healthcare uses advanced imaging and AI technologies to optimise both patient care and hospital operations. Our Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is home to the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce, which has been funded again as part of a recent £25m funding to tackle health and social care issues. The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is part of an investment plan of an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council investment, with the King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub (£2.6m award) supporting the development of new digital technologies and reduce the time it takes for these to benefit patients. The Faculty is also home to the Respiratory Physiology and Medicine Group which aims to better our understanding of respiratory physiology in health & disease with the aim of improving clinical care. The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences is one of the world’s centres of excellence for dental education, oral and craniofacial scientific research, and oral healthcare provision, ranked 1st globally for dentistry in the QS World University Rankings 2020. In collaboration with our London teaching hospital partners – Guy’s, King’s College, and St Thomas’ – we train dental professionals at all levels, and undertake and actively promote world-class scientific, clinical and translational research focused around three key areas.

The other faculties at King’s represent wider interdisciplinary opportunities including across arts & sciences. Within our Faculty of Natural, Mathematics & Engineering Sciences is King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence bringing together the diverse and growing community in artificial intelligence (AI) at the university, whilst the London Medical Imaging and AI Centre for Value-Based Healthcare uses advanced imaging and AI technologies to optimise both patient care and hospital operations. Our Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is home to the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce, which has been funded again as part of a recent £25m funding to tackle health and social care issues. The College is also home to the Faculty of Arts & Humanities; the Dickson Poon School of Law; and the King’s Business School, all stand-alone faculties.

Selection process

Applications will be shortlisted by a selection committee drawn from across the Faculty, and wider College representatives. This will be a two stage interview process with the final panel being chaired by the Vice President (Research & Innovation) and will include the Executive Dean and representatives from across the Faculty, wider College, and external input.
