Navigating the multidimensions of professionalism
SAPC (Society of Academic Primary Care) Conference
Dr Niki Jakeways presented the work that KUMEC have been doing in encouraging 2nd year medical students to promote physical activity whilst on their GP placements: ‘Promoting Active Practice: medical students in action’. This presentation was a team effort and built on the work of Dr Laila Abdullah, Dr Liza Kirtchuk (both on maternity leave) and Dr Ann Wylie. Please take a look at the presentation to see some of the projects that the students designed and worked on.
Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Conference
Tristan Fraser is a final year King’s medical student who won the Student Prize at ASME this year.Tristan's paper titled "Peer Marking for Written Assessment" explored a seldom-used application of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) in written work, investigating whether students can provide valid, reliable marks as well as helpful peer feedback on essays previously submitted as part of SSCs. Qualitative analysis on the surveys and focus group transcripts showed peers enjoyed the different insight peers provide, whilst quantitative analysis on the peer marks showed no significant difference between peer and faculty marks. This pilot study may show the benefit of using peers to mark written work for students to gain a novel insight into providing feedback, as well as relieving faculty teaching burden.
Pete Tayler-Hunt gave a debate-provoking presentation examining the impact of student honesty on an online system for recording lecture attendance. The findings of the study correlated with those conducted within other educational establishments: students are more comfortable being dishonest online, likely as a consequence of the lack of affective feedback inherent in online interactions. Whilst lecture attendance is a strong predictor of academic success, causality cannot be assumed, and lecture attendance is probably not the most accurate measure of student engagement in an academic programme.
Dr Anicka Sufraz (a recent KCL graduate) gave a presentation on the use of a family translator in the Phase 3 RCGP sessions
2018 Conferences
The 2018 Annual KUMEC Community Teachers Conference
The 2018 KUMEC conference was on the Mind and Body, Integrating Mental and Physical Healthcare and the feedback reminded us of how important it is to look after ourselves first and also our students, colleagues and patients. Here are the PDFs of the slides from our two Keynote Speakers and some of our workshop facilitators.
Dr Zoe Williams: Physical Activity for the Management and Prevention of Disease
Dr Sean Cross: Overcoming barriers to mental and physical healthcare integration in our hospitals
Workshops:
Michelle Robinson: Student Support for Struggling Students
Dr Jonathan Tomlinson: Trauma
SAPC (Society of Academic Primary Care) Conference
Neelam Parmar is Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) in primary care at King’s. At this year’s UK SAPC (Society of Academic Primary Care) conference, she was winner of the best education presentation (her work with Drs Russell Hearn, Patrick White and Shaine Mehta. The paper was entitled: “Emotional responses from medical students provoked by professionalism issues in simulated primary care consultations”.
Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Conference 2018
Dr Liza Kirtchuk and Dr Niki Jakeways presented an “Evaluation of an innovative undergraduate longitudinal placement for 2nd year medical students in General Practice: What works and what needs to improve”. Key findings from the evaluation of the inaugural year of the programme illustrated the successes that centred around the continuity and legitimacy of the student role in the GP learning environment, as well as the challenges and next steps for continued improvement. GP Speciality Teachers as Trainees
by Liza Kirtchuk and Kerry Boardman
Encouraging registrars from local schemes to teach our students is something we have been doing for a few years at KUMEC, and for the past year we have been more formally evaluating this, in collaboration with UCL who run Innovative Training Posts (ITPs) in medical education at their local GP specialty training schemes. Our analysis of the routine student evaluation data (the feedback given at the end of placement) shows that trainees are receiving evaluations on a par with qualified tutors and students feel they demonstrate effective teaching strategies, positive attitudes towards students and represent good role models. Interviews we have conducted with trainees indicate that teaching contributes to development of their clinical knowledge, as well as an understanding of themselves as learners. They view themselves as near peers and feel this contributes to a safe learning environment. They have some concerns about their limited GP experience and how this impacts on their teaching. The next phase of our research will be to carry out focus groups and interviews with both students who have been taught by trainees, and other key stakeholders in medical education, such as PDs, Heads of Teaching at universisities and GP trainers. We are exploring the development of an ITP in medical education within our local training schemes as well.
Click here to see a recent presentation at the Society for Academic Primary Care conference proposing that all GP trainees should be given the opportunity to teach, and a summary of their project and findings so far are here.
