The first cohort of the new MSc Law & Professional Practice has started this September at The Dickson Poon School of Law, a top 20 global law school.

The new degree programme will enable graduates without prior legal education or training in the UK to study in the heart of legal London and prepare for a career as a solicitor or barrister, providing a comprehensive graduate introduction to law and practice.

We are delighted to be welcoming our first cohort of over 40 students onto our new MSc Law & Professional Practice this September. We are excited about and looking forward to seeing what this cohort will go onto achieve.

Sam Malhotra, Director of the Professional Law Institute at the School

The programme is offered as a two-year postgraduate degree, with the first year available as a stand-alone Postgraduate Diploma.

The Postgraduate Diploma modules and year one MSc modules provide the foundational knowledge required for professional legal practice as a barrister or solicitor in England & Wales, enabling progress to both the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and the Bar Training programme.

The MSc combines academic rigour with a rich professional practice context. Our students will be taught by an incredible team, including both leading legal academics and highly experienced lecturers with many years of legal practice themselves, and will be able to authentically engage not just with the letter of the law but with the practice and business of law. For example, on our innovative Legal Practice Technology module, our students will have the opportunity to learn directly from four leading law firms and a High Court Master, all of whom support the aims of the course and have been happy to collaborate with us on the design and delivery of this module.

In the second year of the MSc, students will have opportunities to explore in-depth, key complementary areas for legal practice such as Legal Technology, Business Strategy and Psychology. The MSc will also provide modules in a range of business-critical legal practice disciplines including Business Practice, Litigation Practice, Real Estate Practice, Mergers & Acquisition, Employment and Company Financing.

The degree teaches core legal knowledge and the skills needed in modern practice. Working in small ‘law firm’ groups in a practice orientated environment, students will utilise a bespoke, experiential problem-based learning approach to apply legal principles to identify and address the type of legal problems clients routinely face.

To assimilate focused SQE prep, students taking the MSc will also have access to the BARBRI SQE1 preparation programme at no cost and Diploma students will be entitled to a 50% discount.
