FoDOCS Celebrates Silver Award at Athena Swan 20th Anniversary Event

We have already shared the exciting news that our Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS) was awarded the Athena Swan Silver Award in 2024. We are now delighted to announce that the award was officially received at the celebratory event held on 2nd of April, hosted by Advance HE, marking 20 years of the Athena Swan Gender Equality Charter.

This special occasion brought together institutions and individuals from across the higher education sector to reflect on the progress and collective impact of the Charter since its inception in 2005. Originally launched to support the advancement of women in science, Athena Swan has since expanded to address gender equality more broadly across all academic disciplines and professional roles.

Dr. Ana Angelova Volponi, FoDOCS Athena Swan Faculty Lead, received the Silver Award on behalf of the faculty during the event. The award was later formally presented to our Executive Dean, Professor Michael Escudier. This proud moment reflects the dedication and collaborative efforts of our entire faculty community in championing equality, inclusivity, and positive cultural change.

The Advance HE event celebrated the shared journey of institutions that have committed to the Athena Swan Charter over the past two decades, noting the collaborative efforts that continue to shape a more equitable future in academia.

FoDOCS was particularly praised for our commitment to recognising and celebrating the rise of female professors within the faculty, a testament to our efforts in nurturing talent, removing barriers, and fostering a supportive environment for career progression.

Dr. Ana Angelova Volponi said: “Receiving the Silver Award is not only a prestigious honour but also a strong affirmation of our faculty's dedication to continuous improvement and equality. As we look ahead, FoDOCS remains committed to sustaining this momentum and working collectively to uphold the principles of Athena Swan for years to come.”
