The 2026 guide, which provides a total ranking of 123 UK universities, along with individual ratings by subject area, places King’s at 21st place in the overall table.

Of the 35 specific areas in which King’s appeared, an impressive 19 subjects are featured in the top 20 for that subject, with seven of those making the top 10.

This strong performance in the Guardian University Guide is a clear reflection of King’s academic quality and well-regarded reputation across a wide range of disciplines.

He added: "Climbing seven places to 21st nationally — with more than half of our subject areas ranked in the top 20 — is a significant achievement. It speaks to the commitment of our academic and professional staff, the ambition of our students, and our shared focus on delivering excellence in education, research, and the wider student experience.”

The highest ranking subject for King’s in the guide is ‘Sociology and Social Policy’, which came in at 3rd place in its respective category, while ‘Business and Management’ climbed five places from last year, from 13th to 8th.

Others in the top 10 include ‘International Relations’ (4th), ‘Politics’ (5th), ‘Law’ (7th), ‘Psychology’ (10th) and ‘Classics and Ancient History’ (10th).

‘General Nursing’ (13th), ‘Mental Health Nursing’ (15th), and ‘Children’s Nursing’ (17th) complete an enviable trio, with all three now within the top 20 for that subject area.

The ranking, published on Saturday 13th September, puts King’s at 13th place among the Russell Group.

In June 2025, King’s was ranked 31st best university in the world and 5th best in the UK in the QS World University rankings 2026.

The Guardian University Guide aims to help prospective students decide where to apply to study, developing its rankings using data to evaluate factors such as teaching quality, student satisfaction and career prospects.
