The Departments of French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies joint submission to REF2021 has been rated 87.5 per cent at ‘world leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*) for research impact and 100 per cent for ‘world leading’ (4*) research environment at the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).

The REF is carried out approximately every six-seven years to assess the quality of research across UK universities, show the quality and output of research on a domestic and global stage and show the impact research has on the academic environment and our society – highlighting its real-world benefits.

For the Unit of Assessment 26 (Modern Languages), the Department submitted 58.5 fte (62 individuals) to REF 2021. 130 outputs (many of which were double weighted) and four impact case studies were ultimately selected for submission but these form only a small percentage of the much bigger oeuvre of research produced over the last seven years.

This is a joint submission from the Department of French, the Department of German and the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies.
