School of Education, Communication and Society

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of a valued student, Sergei Kojine.

Sergei Kojine

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of a valued student, Sergei Kojine, who died on the weekend of June 1st/2nd after a long illness. This has come as a shock to us all and our thoughts and sympathies are with Sergei’s partner and those close to him, including many of us here at KCL.

Sergei enrolled on the MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in September 2018 and as part of the programme he successfully completed his CELTA course (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) in March 2019. During his time here Sergei immersed himself into university life, joining in with social activities, attending teaching conferences and making interesting and insightful contributions during lectures. Sergei was new to teaching and the subject of language teaching, though he embraced this new challenge in his life with genuine enthusiasm, and it is a comfort to know how much he enjoyed his time here.

Sergei made many friends on the programme, and he took great pleasure in meeting people from different walks of life. He enjoyed talking about culture and politics, and friends and fellow students on the MA have spoken of how interested Sergei was in learning about their lives and cultures. He will be sorely missed by all of us who knew and studied alongside him.

The death of a friend and colleague affects us in different ways. If you need any support or someone to talk to our counselling and mental health services are here to help. You can contact them by phone on 0207 848 1234 or email counselling@kcl.ac.uk.
