Informatics team win at international conference

A paper written by a team from the Department of Informatics, in collaboration with the University of Warsaw, has won the best paper award at the SPIRE 2018 conference in Lima, Peru. The team was made up of PhD students Mai Alzamel and Panagiotis Charalampopoulos and members of the Algorithms and Data Analysis group, Professor Costas S. Iliopoulos and Dr. Solon P. Pissis.

The paper, titled ‘Efficient Computation of Sequence Mappability’ discussed a fundamentally new and efficient method of measuring how mappable a given genome is for certain DNA sequencing technologies. It was written as part of a collaborative project (‘Algorithms for text processing with errors and uncertainties’) between the Department of Informatics and the University of Warsaw, which is funded 100% from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

Mai Alzamel is funded by the King Saud University, KSA.
