Writer, artist and King’s alumnus Dylan Huw (BA Liberal Arts with a Major in Film Studies, 2014-2017), together with artist Manon Awst, will lead a project to represent Wales in Venice as a collateral event at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

The project is a partnership between the two artists and their collaborators, Oriel Davies in Newtown and Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthen. Rooted in Welsh traditions of ‘liveness’ including cynghanedd and site-specific performance, the collaboration promises to invite audiences into a dynamic, evolving space of artistic exchange.

I'm so thrilled to be working with Manon Awst as co-lead artist on a collaborative project to represent Wales at next year's Venice Biennale, co-presented by Oriel Davies and Oriel Myrddin and commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales. Wales in Venice / Cymru yn Fenis holds an outsized status for Wales's artistic ecosystem, proudly placing Wales-based practices within the fabric of the "international" art world and producing all kinds of opportunities for artists, art workers, organisations and audiences on the ground in Wales.

Among a number of very strong proposals, this presentation stood out in terms of its compelling artistic exploration of landscape, language, and Welsh traditions, alongside its strong technical and scientific foundations and extensive network of collaborators both in Wales and internationally. We also appreciated its resonance with the Venice Biennale’s curatorial theme In Minor Keys by Koyo Kouoh. We look forward to working with the team and sharing their creativity both in Venice and here in Wales.

A writer, convenor, and collaborative practitioner, Dylan Huw’s work spans publishing and curatorial projects, essays and art criticism, and long-term collaborations with artists. It is guided by interdisciplinary, translingual and site-responsive methodologies, approaching writing and research as ‘time-based media.’

‘Certain past exhibitions have personally been a massive influence on my own work, and the much-loved invigilator programme, which enables early-career practitioners based in Wales to spend a month or more working at the biennale, has directly accelerated the creative trajectories and international networks of several generations of Welsh artists – including, in 2019, my own. It still feels surreal that our work will enter into this legacy,’ Dylan says.

Since graduating from King's in 2017, I've established an interdisciplinary critical-curatorial practice, mainly in the visual arts. While bilingual (Welsh/English) writing has always anchored my work, in recent years I've been led by long-term, dialogic collaboration with artists, which has resulted in work in video, performance, sound and printed matter. I'm beyond excited to get to channel this polyvocal, translingual, embedded ethos into an ambitious new body of work for the biennale, to have our work be in dialogue with practices from all over the world, and to provide generative artistic encounters for audiences in Wales, Venice and beyond.
