King's launches new Modern World History MA
A new Master’s degree by the Department of History is now open for applications.

The Modern World History course, now open for applications, offers the chance to study the history of global, political, economic, and cultural interactions, the history of empires and the transnational histories of Europe (including Britain), Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas.
The Modern World History MA offers a global perspective on the people and the places, the ideas and the objects, that have shaped our world. We have students from around the world that come because they know that our degree is of an incredibly high quality and they will encounter experts ... bringing the state of the art and their cutting-edge research agendas into their conversations and their encounters with students.
Professor Alana Harris, Professor of Gender and Modern Religious History
Students can tailor their degree through a wide range of optional modules, exploring topics such as Maoist China, modern African history, gender and British society, and more. These options allow students to specialise in regions or themes that align with their interests. Modules may also be taken at King's London partner institutions (which include UCL, Queen Mary and Royal Holloway).
The course uses a distinctive approach to world history, by emphasising the need to study imperial political structures in relation both to other forces of global interaction, and to the lives and cultures of the regions which came under their influence, offering ample opportunity to study European nation building and modern British politics and society.
Our global reach in teaching is unique. This allows the students a lot of flexibility in customising their degree and their experience. They can choose to study a specific region or specific country.
Dr Katrin Schreiter, Senior Lecturer in German and History
King's central London location offers students unrivalled access to world-class museums, collections, archives and libraries as well as easy access to resources in Europe.
As Dr Katrin Schreiter explains, the programme develops “critical thinking skills, deep global knowledge and cultural sensitivity - all qualities future employers value.” With these strengths, students graduate equipped to analyse global issues, collaborate across cultures and communicate with impact, paving the way for careers in policy, NGOs, media, education, cultural institutions and more.
Rooted in King’s global research strength and London location, the Modern World History MA offers students an exciting, distinctive and deeply relevant way of understanding the past and its impact on today’s world.
The course is now open for September 2026 intake.
