King’s increased its percentage of world leading research (4* rated) to 55.1% and maintained its sixth position for ‘research power’. King’s has also been rated third in the UK amongst multidisciplinary institutions for impact, with 67.8% of its research impact rated outstanding. In addition, King’s was the top rated university in two Units of Assessment – Allied Health and Classics, with Chemistry achieving the highest score for impact and King’s Business School scoring among the top ten Schools in the country.

For this submission, King’s included 2008 members of staff in 25 units of assessment and 4399 outputs of 16 different types, covering journal articles, monographs, compositions, patents and websites. The 137 impact case studies which were included, covered the breadth and depth of the university’s research from innovations in healthcare which have saved thousands of lives, cultural impacts which have transformed public understanding, to impacts which have changed government policies, laws or advice. Examples include migraine research which has produced five new affordable drugs to help the 1 billion people globally who suffer, pregnancy research helping to alleviate the 20 million births around the world which are affected by serious pregnancy complications, research into wildfires by mapping, monitoring and understanding where they occur to help communities protect themselves and enabling policymakers to develop legislation that protects victims of modern slavery and holds those responsible accountable.
