The REF is carried out approximately every six–seven years to assess the quality of research across UK universities, show the quality and output of research on a domestic and global stage and show the impact research has on the academic environment and our society – highlighting its real-world benefits.

The assessment consisted of 70 outputs and three impact case studies published over the REF cycle between 2014 to 2020. Each strand is judged on a scale of 1* to 4*, with 4* denoting world-leading research.
