London's Women's historians: a celebration and conversation

London's Women's historians: a celebration and conversation

On 13 March this year, two members of the Department of History (Laura Carter and Alana Harris) organised an event at the IHR entitled 'London's Women's historians: a celebration and conversation'. This sold-out event explored the history of female historians within London institutions, facilitated a roundtable on women within the profession now, and concluded with the unveiling of a pop-up exhibition of portraits up the stairway of the IHR. This DIY exhibiting approach sought to assert/reinsert the contribution of women the profession across the 20th century and in a variety of guises (including outside of academia) and to retell the narrative of women's history-making/curating activities visually. A film of the entire proceedings is available on the IHR website - and the session on women historians at King's (featuring Jinty Nelson on women in the King's history department, Laura Gowing on women's history in the curriculum, and Alana Harris speaking about the Athena SWAN process - for which the Department has recently attained a Bronze award) is available now, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFa45VQgVyU
