Martyn Cobourne elected as Dean of FDS RCS England
The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London is delighted to announce that Professor Martyn Cobourne, our Academic Head of Orthodontics, has been elected Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

This prestigious appointment reflects his outstanding contributions to dentistry, orthodontics, and academic leadership.
Professor Cobourne’s career is deeply rooted in King’s College London. He graduated from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990, later completing his specialty training in orthodontics at King’s College Hospital. His academic journey includes a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship and a PhD at the United Medical and Dental Schools, University of London.
Since joining King’s as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics in 2004, and later being promoted to Professor in 2011, he has become a leading figure in orthodontic research and education. His work has focused on molecular signalling pathways in craniofacial development and the effectiveness of contemporary orthodontic treatments, resulting in over 220 peer-reviewed publications and two widely used orthodontic textbooks.
This appointment is not only a personal milestone for Professor Cobourne but also a moment of pride for King’s College London. His election underscores the Faculty’s commitment to advancing dental science and highlights the global impact of our academic community.
Professor Cobourne will succeed Dr Charlotte Eckhardt, who has provided three years of dedicated leadership to the Faculty of Dental Surgery. In his remarks following the election, Professor Cobourne expressed his gratitude and humility, noting: “I’m very honoured to be appointed Dean elect, and I hope I’ll be able to follow in the excellent footsteps of Charlotte and Matthew before her.”
As Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Professor Cobourne will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of dental education, research, and clinical practice across the UK and beyond. His leadership will strengthen the ties between King’s College London and the Royal College of Surgeons, ensuring that innovation and excellence continue to define the profession.
His election continues a tradition of Professor’s in Orthodontics from KCL serving as RCS Faculty Deans , his immediate predecessors Fraser McDonald and Murray Meikle both served with distinction as Deans of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
