The Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King’s has appointed Professor Monica Busse-Morris as the new Vice Dean (People & Talent).

As Vice Dean (People & Culture), Monica will provide strategic direction and delivery for opportunities and processes for staff within NMPC. She will also oversee the Faculty’s goals and monitoring for equality, diversity and inclusion for staff and students. She will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team and our ED&I committee to ensure that all Faculty staff and students are enabled to reach their potential in line with Faculty strategic goals in an equitable and sustainable way.

Monica is dedicated to enabling others to develop in their careers. She has developed structured mentoring programmes that have been delivered across diverse professions. Her approach recognises and nurtures individual strengths while considering the unique challenges people face. Monica is a certified Executive Coach. She holds a European Mentoring and Coaching Council Practitioner Accreditation and has been a UKRI Future Leaders Fellows Development Network Mentor since 2021. She has supervised PhD students and mentored post-doctoral clinician researchers to secure prestigious external fellowships including Wellcome Trust Career Development Awards and NIHR Advanced Fellowships.

Monica is an allied health professional academic specialising in the development and evaluation of complex physical and psychosocial interventions for people living with chronic long term health conditions. Her career journey has shaped her understanding of the varied paths that people take in academia. After training as a clinical physiotherapist in South Africa, she moved to Wales where she was awarded a PhD in 2005, and later secured a Welsh-based NIHR post-doctoral fellowship. The impact of her research was recognised by two successive Health and Care Research Wales Senior Research Leader Awards since 2022.

King's commitment to inclusive excellence and the Faculty's mission to improve health outcomes for underserved communities is what drew me to this role. As someone who has experienced firsthand the challenges of transitioning between different countries, educational systems and career stages, I believe the best research and education emerges when we enable diverse teams of clinicians, researchers, and academics to reach their full potential. I am really looking forward to working together with the many brilliant colleagues in the Faculty in this new role which places people at the centre of all that matters.
