King’s Dentistry PhD student Ana Justo Caetano has received the Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize, awarded by the British Society of Periodontology.  The prize was presented for her study entitled “Mapping Human Gingival Tissues at Single Cell Resolution”.  The research aims to identify gingival mesenchymal stem sells to understand their role in health and periodontal disease, through single cell RNA sequencing. It ultimately aims to unravel novel disease biomarkers.

Said Dr Veronica Booth, Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant of the award: “The studentship and project are at the forefront of current research. We are incredibly proud of Ana”.

The study is supported by a BBSRC Industry partnership with Unilever and was presented at the British Society of Periodontology Conference 2019. Ana was presented with the award by Professor Nicola West (pictured).

Ana was a member of the first cohort of students on the King’s MSc in Regenerative Dentistry which has now been running for five years. As the only MSc in regenerative dentistry, the programme is unique to the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.
