Participants from universities across Europe attended the annual Summer School at Sandbjerg hosted by Aarhus University in collaboration with King’s, the University of Tübingen, Université Paris Cité, the University of Bern, and the University of Oslo. Twelve PhD students presented papers related to their PhD research. The students then had time to discuss each paper with peers and senior scholars.

We found the presentation and discussion of our papers to be immensely helpful. There was a real range of topics and disciplinary approaches, which was fascinating, and the twelve students who took part were all at different stages of their doctoral degrees. It was interesting to hear about how the PhD structure and experience varied between different European countries. We all had many interesting conversations, on both academic and non-academic topics! The keynote lecture, by Olisa Muojama from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, provided an insightful approach to global history that was new to many of us.

The Sandbjerg Summer School in Global History provides PhD students with an overview of global history and ensures they are familiar with recent developments in the field. The School provides a unique opportunity for participants to get to know different perspectives on global history and to network with both established scholars and peers from other countries.

PhD student Sarah Limb reflects on the experience: "Overall, the summer school was a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow PhD students and academic staff at several different universities and to receive detailed feedback on a section of work. The Sandbjerg estate is beautiful, located between a fjord and a lake, and the residential nature of the summer school lent itself to a real sense of community. I would highly recommend any PhD student working in the field of global history to apply to the summer school and enjoy such a unique opportunity."

The Summer School is designed for PhD candidates. The course is relevant for all levels of the PhD process. Early-stage projects, preferably at the end of their first year or in their second year, profit from the breadth of perspectives the senior scholars provide and the general overview of the field. More mature projects profit from the extensive research expertise of the senior scholars and the discussions with international peers.
