Professor Irene Higginson recognised in annual Highly Cited Researchers list

Annual list identifies researchers across the globe whose publications rank in the top 1% by citations

Professor Irene Higginson, Executive Dean of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, has been named as a Highly Cited Researcher for her contribution across scientific fields in the 2021 Highly Cited Researchers List from Clarivate

This highly anticipated list identifies researchers across the world who have demonstrated significant broad influence, reflected through their publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers during the last decade. They are in the top 1% in their field in the world by citations.

This year the list includes 6,602 Highly Cited Researchers in various fields from more than 70 countries and regions. Professor Higginson is one of the researchers in the UK who make up 7.5% of this year’s list.

In the last decade, Professor Higginson has published over 300 papers with over 15,000 citations. Her research interests include quality of life and outcome measurements, evaluation of palliative care especially of new services and interventions, epidemiology, clinical audit, effectiveness, psychosocial care, symptom assessment, breathlessness, cachexia/anorexia, and elderly care.

I am delighted and honoured to once more be named on the Highly Cited Researchers list. I am grateful that this spotlights the field of palliative care and the research underway to improve care and treatments for patients and those important to them. Research is a team effort, and I thank all my talented colleagues in the Cicely Saunders Institute and King’s College London, and to our funders, collaborators and patient and public partners, for their steadfast efforts and belief in the importance of seeking ways to improve care for those facing progressive illness and symptoms.
