I have been an NIHR Research Professor for five and a half years, so it’s an honour to now be recognised as part of such an amazing group of Senior Investigators. Being an NIHR researcher is such a unique opportunity. To be able to work alongside other researchers has helped us all achieve more than we could as individuals.

Professor Lucy Chappell appointed as NIHR Senior Investigator
The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) has recently announced the appointment of 46 NIHR Senior Investigators in the 14th round of the competition.
Professor Lucy Chappell, NIHR Research Professor in Obstetrics from the School of Life Course Sciences, has been appointed as an NIHR Senior Investigator. Professor Chappell is also an Honorary Consultant Obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Senior Investigators are the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the NIHR, and are fundamental to expanding scientific avenues to address public health challenges across the country.
Professor Chappell runs a research programme investigating prediction and prevention of adverse pregnancy outcomes, particularly in women with pre-existing co-morbidities such as chronic hypertension and chronic kidney disease. She is one of just 31 researchers to have been newly appointed this year.
When asked about supporting the future of research, she said: “It’s great to be a role model and ambassador for training the next generation. You are often judged by what comes after you, so it’s important we inspire and nurture the next generation of researchers.
“And it’s not just about researchers, it’s about inspiring everyone across health and social care. I’ve started to notice a chance and there is beginning to be a recognition that research is everyone’s business.”
