I hope the award will highlight the importance of integration across physical and mental health…so that the services we provide and the research we do better matches the needs of people who are ill.

Professor Mark Edwards awarded the prestigious Stanley Fahn Presidential Lecture award by International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders
Award is the highest honour that recognises an outstanding scholar and role-model clinician in the field of Movement Disorders.

This award acknowledges his extensive work at the interface of mind-body research, investigating the interaction between psychological and physical symptoms.
Professor Edwards is both a clinician working for the South London and Maudsley and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts and a researcher investigating disease pathology and treatments for conditions that involve both brain and body, such as Functional Neurological Disorder.
He has published over 300 peer reviewed publications and is author of the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Parkinson’s Disease and Other Movement Disorders.
As well as his extensive research and clinical work, he advises patient-facing charities including FNDHope and the UK Dystonia Society. He has advocated extensively for improving the patient experience and greater public attention for disorders with both a mental and physical component.
“I'm very grateful for all the people who have supported me along the way, and the patients who have taught and inspired me so much,” comments Professor Edwards. “I hope the award will highlight the importance of integration across physical and mental health within neurology, psychiatry and medicine in general, so that the services we provide and the research we do better matches the needs of people who are ill.”
Professor Mark Edwards’ recognition with this award is a testament to his outstanding international leadership in the field of movement disorders. His innovative work at the interface of neurology and psychiatry has reshaped our understanding of functional movement disorders and continues to influence clinical practice worldwide.
