Dr Sabrina Bajwah, King’s graduate and Clinical Senior Lecturer, has been awarded the King’s Changemaker Award, as part of the King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards 2023.

Sabrina’s work is challenging structural racism in palliative care, and changing the way medical professionals work to provide equitable care for ethnically diverse patients

Even if the changes that we bring about are small, they are important. Lots of small changes will snowball, and each day we will move a little bit closer to equity

Dr Sabrina Bajwah

During the first wave of COVID-19, she worked with companies to quickly produce translations of key advice into 25 languages.

Sabrina’s research showed that UK-wide policies during COVID-19 may have disproportionately impacted people from ethnically diverse groups at the end of their lives. Her research also found a lack of understanding by healthcare providers about the difference between equal and equitable care, which can lead to distress and inequality in outcomes.

Sabrina was nominated for the King’s Changemaker Award in recognition of her world-leading research which has helped to reduce health inequalities, particularly for people from ethnically diverse groups at the end of life. Sabrina’s work is at the heart of King’s vision to make the world a better place.

Professor Irene Higginson, Executive Dean, Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care

Sabrina completed her MSc in Palliative Care in 2005, and her PhD in Health Services Research in 2016, both at King’s. She is currently a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University.

The MSc in Palliative Care is delivered by the Cicely Saunders Institute in partnership with St Christopher’s Hospice. The course incorporates leading research and innovative, evidence-based practice. The Institute, which is part of the King’s Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, offers world-class teaching and is a world-leading centre for palliative care research.
