Matteo Nebbiai won the Giandomenico Majone Prize for the best paper presented by junior academic at the Biennial Conference of the Standing Group on Regulatory Governance.

The conference took place at the Hertie School, in Berlin, from 11 to 13 June, and brought together leading scholars of policy and regulation from across the continent.

Matteo’s paper shows that some firms may support restrictive data regulations, such as privacy laws, when these hurt foreign competitors. It also reveals how such rules can serve as tools of corporate protectionism in the digital economy.

Matteo, a member of the Department of Political Economy, said: "Winning the award was a wonderful and unexpected surprise. The PhD journey can be long, so this gave me a much-needed morale boost.

“Experiencing it in the warm, supportive atmosphere of the conference made it even more meaningful - and made me feel like I’m finally finding my academic ‘home’. I think that’s one of the most important, and often most difficult, parts of doing a PhD.”
