The need for monitoring the earth’s weather and climate has never been greater but the volume of accurate weather and climate information from the ground is in decline. Automaticl weather monitoring stations are expensive to build and maintain but, now, academics at King’s College London have come up with innovative solutions to make their own high-quality monitoring stations at a mere fraction (around 3%) of the cost of those on the market.

Automatic weather stations are expensive to build and maintain, but now academics at King’s College London have come up with innovative solutions to make their own high-quality monitoring stations at a mere fraction (around 3%) of the cost of those on the market.
Students and staff on the FreeStation project are helping provide accurate data for crop monitoring, localised flood and drought prediction around the world using a combination of low cost hardware, open source micro-controllers and software – and some good old fashioned ingenuity.
