Haydee and the Flying Fish tells the story of Haydee Oberreuter, a Chilean human rights activist who lost her child due to a forced abortion during torture sessions under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

The documentary follows Haydee’s 40-year pursuit of legal justice, and her journey toward truth and reparation.

On 12 June, guests were able to join Haydee for the London premiere of the film and had the chance to take part in a discussion afterwards too. The event was organised by King’s graduate student Juan Mena (MA Public Policy).

The screening was attended by members of the Chilean community, including survivors of the dictatorship who came to the UK as exiles in the 1970s, representatives from the Chilean Embassy, and students from various programmes and departments at King’s.

Juan said: “During the open conversation with Haydee, we reflected on the role of truth and justice today, and the inherent contradictions in transitional justice processes, particularly the effects of time and silence.”

The event was made possible through the School of Politics and Economics Opportunity Fund, which offers small grants to students and staff to fund projects and initiatives that benefit the school community.

The fund was established in 2024 and saw more than 10 projects backed with funding and administrative support. You can find out more about the fund.
