Unique insights on offer at graduate outreach event
The School of Politics & Economics partnered with the Civil Service Fast Stream Social Mobility Network to host the Fast Stream National Outreach Event at King’s College London.
The event offered students unique insights into the application process of the Civil Service Fast Stream, with input from current fast streamers and King’s alumni who have previously made the journey through the graduate scheme.
The network, led by Tayyaba Rasool (Digital Stream) and Abu Latif (Commercial Stream), was established in 2017. Its aim is to improve social mobility and inclusion on the Fast Stream, to increase the representation of those coming from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and improve their experiences once on the programme.
The event, held on 7 October, was opened by SSPP Associate Director for Education, Frances Kirby. The network team then delivered a workshop on the application process, providing advice and guidance to an audience of more than 50 students.
This was followed by a panel of current fast streamers, including King’s alumni, who have successfully progressed onto the scheme. The panel gave their insight into the fast stream and answered students’ questions too.
Reflecting on the day, Tayyaba said: “We found the event incredibly rewarding and left feeling inspired by the energy in the room. For us, the biggest takeaway was how it showed the value of diverse talent in the Civil Service and how important it is to keep breaking down barriers to social mobility.
“The workshops in particular stood out; the depth of discussion and the way students engaged with different ways of thinking for each stage of the assessments was truly impressive. More than anything, it was rewarding to show students that they belong in the room and that their experiences are not only valid but vital for the future leadership of the Civil Service.”
