We are proud to have a diverse range of activities and events to help you settle into life in the School of Politics and Economics. Here’s our list of recommended activities to enhance your experience as a new student:
1. Read your department handbook via KEATS
2. Become a student representative
We are currently recruiting student representatives for the School of Politics & Economics. As a student representative, you will attend Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings as a representative of your course. You will be the voice of your peers and support the department to make meaningful change. As a Student Representative, you will be expected to attend 2/3 SSLC meetings in the year and be invited to department and committee meetings.
Being a Student Representative is a great way to boost your skills and build your CV experience.
If you are interested in becoming a student representative, please fill out the relevant form. Please note, student representatives are recruited on a voluntary basis, and we therefore do not have a formal election process.
3. Join one of our affiliated societies
We fund and support eight student societies and student-led groups to host social events, guest talks, buddy schemes and career events throughout the academic year:
4. Check out of our upcoming School events
View and book your place on our events via the link here: SPE Events Calendar.
5. Meet with your personal tutor
As a new student, you’ll be assigned a personal tutor to support your academic progress and wellbeing. Your tutor will be your first point of contact for advice throughout your time at King’s - whether it's academic feedback, career guidance or opportunities beyond the seminar room.
They’ll be in touch with you directly via your King’s email at the start of term to invite you to your first meeting.
Topics you might discuss with your personal tutor include:
- Academic feedback and study progress
- Exam preparation
- Resource/signposting to wellbeing support
- Co-curricular and career opportunities
- Study abroad or internships
- Your tutor’s own academic journey
- Your tutor’s current research or modules they teach on
- What you both enjoy about being part of King’s!
6. Check out our SPE Opportunity Fund
Do you have an idea for a project or initiative just waiting to be brought to life? The School of Politics and Economics Opportunity Fund is here to help. The fund offers grants of up to £500 for individuals and up to £2,000 for groups to assist with bringing your idea from the project page to reality.
