Wellcome invests £12M in Imaging research at King's
King’s has been awarded £12.1m for a Wellcome Trust/EPSRC Centre for Imaging focusing on the science and translation of medical imaging and related computational modelling.
Wellcome has today announced that King’s has been awarded £12.1m for a Wellcome Trust/EPSRC Centre for Imaging, which will focus on the science and translation of medical imaging and related computational modelling.
The Centre, based at the St Thomas’ Hospital Campus will build on the work of the former Medical Engineering Centre of Research Excellence, also funded by the Wellcome Trust and EPSRC. It will bring together teams from multiple scientific disciplines where engineers, physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians and chemists will work collaboratively with biomedical scientists and clinicians.
The application involved 21 co-investigators from the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience.
The teams will focus on identifying, solving and translating solutions to complex multi-factorial challenges including improving long-term neurological outcomes of sick infants and children, improving outcomes of patients with chronic cardiac conditions and improving the care of cancer patients by identifying which treatments are working at an early stage.
King’s is one of 10 institutions receiving 14 Wellcome Centre awards. The Wellcome Centres all aim to advance our understanding of health and disease, and span fundamental and social sciences, clinical research and engineering.
Provost (Health), Professor Sir Robert Lechler said: ‘This award is hugely encouraging and emphasises the importance of multi and inter-disciplinary working, which is a key aspect of the university's new research strategy. I would like to congratulate all who have been involved.’
The Wellcome Trust’s Director Dr Jeremy Farrar said: ‘We believe in long term support for discovery-driven science, and Wellcome Centres are an outstanding environment for researchers to further our understanding of fundamental biology, accelerate translation to clinical practice, and explore the social and cultural context of medicine.’
